SYSTEM SELECTION

Steam or hot water: start at the process

Compare useful operating characteristics without assuming one system fits every application.

What does the process consume?

Steam offers latent heat and can serve processes that use steam directly. Hot water circulates sensible heat through a closed or open loop. The required temperature, pressure, heat-transfer method and contamination limits should guide selection.

Look beyond the boiler

Steam requires management of feedwater, steam distribution, traps and condensate. Hot-water systems require flow management, pumping, expansion and temperature control. Compare the whole plant, including water treatment and maintenance.

Evaluate lifecycle operation

Review load variation, startup needs, distribution distances and the skills available to operate the plant. An engineer should evaluate the actual process and applicable Alberta requirements before a conversion is specified.
