How much useful heat?
kW = L/min × 4.186 × ΔT ÷ 60
Assumes liquid water at 1 kg/L and constant specific heat of 4.186 kJ/(kg·K). Excludes losses, phase change, fouling, glycol, redundancy and design margins. Not valid for steam generation or pressure/temperature limit determination.
Translate boiler horsepower.
1 BHP ≈ 9.8095 kW thermal
Boiler horsepower is a conventional thermal rating, distinct from mechanical horsepower. It corresponds approximately to 34.5 lb/h equivalent evaporation from and at 212°F. Actual steam flow depends on pressure, feedwater enthalpy, losses and equipment rating basis.
Compare assumed fuel use.
Fuel GJ = kW × hours × 0.0036 ÷ efficiency
Efficiencies must use the same fuel heating-value basis and represent comparable annual operating conditions. No energy price, savings guarantee, emissions factor or payback is assumed. Lower scenario efficiency produces increased fuel use.
Follow the heat.
Steam supply. Useful heat moves from the boiler to the process. Define pressure, demand and steam quality at the point of use.
